Photoshop Basics Step-by-step

Follow the steps below to create an abstract image using Photoshop .

1. Create a new document Launch Photoshop. Choose File>New
Enter the following:
Name = Exercise 2
width = 640 pixels 
height = 480 pixels
resolution = 144ppi
mode = RGB
content = white. Click OK. 

Immediately do a Save As, and save the file to your Zip Disk (naming it yourlastnameex2.psd).

2. Use the paint tools to lay down color Choose or create a color, then select a paint tool to lay down color. Experiment with brush sizes, transfer modes and opacity settings.

3. Use selection tools to outline specific areas Use the selection tools to isolate specific areas. A selected area can be edited, while areas outside a selection are protected. Paint within the selected areas or run filters or adjustments.

4. Use image adjustment tools to change tone and color Experiment with Image > Adjust commands to alter brightness, contrast and hue.

5. Create additional layers Use the Layers palette to create new layers, then add paint to them. Experiment with layer transfer modes and opacity.

6. Experiment with multiple filter effects Run filters on selected areas of your image. Rarely are single effects interesting by themselves — instead, experiment with multiple filters and vary their settings.

7. For Part 1, Print your file to Art - Black & White When finished, print your file to the Art - Black & White printer and hand it in. In Finder, select the Art - Black & White icon on your desktop and choose Printing>Set Default Printer. From Photoshop, choose Page Setup. Set Paper to US Letter. Click the Orientation icon appropriate for your format, Portrait or Landscape. Choose Print, select MP Feeder as the paper source, and click OK.

8. For Part 2, Print your file to Art - Color, upload a JPEG to the server, and post an optimized JPEG on your Web site Repeat steps 1 - 6 to create an image for Part 2, as described in the Requirements

Print your file to the color printer and hand it in. In Finder, select the Art - Color icon on your desktop and choose Printing>Set Default Printer. From Photoshop, choose Page Setup. Set Paper to US Letter. Click the Orientation icon appropriate for your format, Portrait or Landscape. Choose Print, select Multipurpose as the paper source, and click OK.

Save your Photoshop file as a JPEG for submission to the server. Choose File>Save as… Select "JPEG" format and "As a Copy", and click Save. Set Quality to 10, and Baseline Optimized. Upload to the appropriate folder on Art - Server > Coursework > ART 250 Intro Computer Art > Your_class_section.

Size your image and Save for Web. From your original Photoshop file, set an Image>Image Size… to the dimensions you wish the image to appear on your Web site. (Recommend no more than 500 pixels in any dimension.) Choose Save for Web… and using the 4 up view, choose a JPEG setting that minimizes file size while maintaining image quality. Save and post on your portfolio site, using skills learned in Exercise 1.

Always keep a copy of your work in its original Photoshop format for later use.
